ABB innovations improve the energy efficiency of a Microsoft building

ABB provided state-of-the-art building automation solutions, including a daylight operating system, to improve energy efficiency and comfort at new Microsoft offices near Copenhagen, Denmark .

ABB's KNX building control platform, already used in several thousand installations worldwide, uses the Internet of Things, Services and People (IoTSP) to adapt control functions to the natural rhythm of the day. Studies show that intelligent building control can reduce energy consumption by up to 30%.

In Lyngby, on the outskirts of Copenhagen, the new 18 m² Microsoft building consists of two adjacent cubes separated by a large V-shaped atrium, which creates a bright and spacious work area. Complementing this architecture, ABB's intelligent building system is designed to maintain the ideal indoor climate through optimized temperature, air quality and lighting.

“This is a flagship real estate project based on cutting-edge solutions worthy of a world technology leader such as Microsoft. Here is a great example of collaboration between two technological pioneers who aim to mitigate the impact on the environment through IoTSP technology, ”said Tarak Mehta, president of ABB's Electrification Products division.

The building's facade and roof are made of glass: this facilitates the use of daylight technology. Sensors measure the levels of natural sunshine and presence in the building and the system regulates the lighting and shutter controls accordingly. By using heat and sunlight and adjusting the blinds, energy savings can be achieved while ensuring employee comfort. Studies have shown that the savings in energy consumption from lighting can range from 20% to 60% - lighting accounts for 30% of a building's energy consumption.

The project was delivered by the Danish electricity company Hoffmann.
