As the latest CAPEB Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes flash survey indicated, the market for craft building companies is strongly impacted by the current geopolitical and economic context. The results of the study conducted by the CAPEBs of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes among their members for the 1st quarter confirm this trend. All the indicators are down whether it is the level of activity, cash, turnover or margins.
A tight market
39% of business leaders say they are having difficulties with their business activity, ie 13 points more than in the previous quarter and 19 points over one year. This is particularly the case for roofers-zinc workers, tilers and kitchen fitters. In the territories, it is in the departments of the Loire, the Rhône and the Savoy that the companies are the most affected.
In a context of supply difficulties which are delaying worksites, visibility on order books is getting longer. Nearly one in two craftsmen declares visibility for more than 3 months, an increase of 4 points compared to the 4th quarter of 2021.
Corporate profitability continues to plummet
With a result of 29%, the number of companies deploring a low or insufficient level of cash has increased again this quarter by 3 points. As for their margins, they are down for 49% of companies, an increase of 19 points compared to the previous quarter. A loss of up to 20% for 29% of companies. Soaring material and energy prices are thus hitting all businesses hard, especially the most fragile ones.
Hiring intentions still high
Market tension is not dampening companies' hiring intentions. 43% of business leaders indeed wish to recruit or are in reflection. Permanent contracts (CDI) are overwhelmingly favored by 71% of business leaders.
To cope with their difficulties in recruiting skilled labour, 29% of craftsmen plan to train an apprentice this quarter (+22 points compared to the previous quarter).
