An agreement renewed for 3 years reinforcing the CEMEX-LPO partnership
CEMEX and the LPO have been partners since 2003. This collaboration, between a major player in the construction materials industry and one of the most important naturalist associations in France, is based on the exchange of know-how, awareness of the issues protection of nature and enhancement of the natural heritage. The agreement that governs this partnership, so far renewed every year, revolves around two components: "Support", which allows the two partners to pool their skills for the benefit of CEMEX's best contribution to preservation. biodiversity on its activity sites; and “Patronage” in favor of natural heritage preservation programs led by the LPO. For the first time renewed on a triennial basis, this agreement covers the period 2021-2023. Its implementation will allow the LPO in particular to support CEMEX in the fulfillment of its commitment "Companies Committed to Nature" made over the same period 2021-2023 with the Ministry of Ecological Transition and the French Biodiversity Office. (OFB).
Concrete actions in favor of the preservation of biodiversity
Among the actions that will be implemented under the Support component of this 18th convention is the continuation of the “Shore swallows” action plan. Initiated in 2013, it aims to reconcile the exploitation of quarries and the reception of bank swallows, a protected species frequently finding alternative habitats within quarries. After 9 years of monitoring these birds on CEMEX sites, the objective is now to use and enhance the data collected through the publication of a summary document as well as to continue the development of awareness and good practices for the attention of company employees. A second flagship action will be the continuation of the “CEMEX Bétons acts for biodiversity” initiative started in 2012, the objective of which is to contribute to welcoming nature in the city through the implementation of actions in favor of biodiversity on the company's concrete production units.
The financial support of the Life Vison program, for the protection of the European mink, is part of the sponsorship section of the convention. It aims to maintain or even increase the population of European minks in the Charente basin. CEMEX also supports the LPO's program for the House Sparrow in Paris. In fact, faced with the disappearance of more than 73% of sparrows living in intramural Paris between 2003 and 2016, the LPO is carrying out several actions to improve knowledge on the distribution, abundance and evolution of populations of the House sparrow in Paris, to understand and promote the conditions necessary for the proper functioning of the colonies, to provide advice and expertise to the local actors concerned (owners, trustees, social landlords, etc.) to raise their awareness and preserve the colonies monitored.
Beyond these flagship actions, CEMEX's regular exchanges with the LPO for requests for advice and expertise on various projects, the carrying out of studies according to the needs and issues identified at CEMEX sites are also an integral part. of the convention.
“CEMEX and the LPO have been partners for 18 years, which illustrates CEMEX's desire to place the preservation of biodiversity and control of its impact on the environment at the heart of its corporate policy. We are proud of this uninterrupted collaboration with the LPO, which has made it possible to jointly and successfully carry out numerous actions in favor of biodiversity on our business sites, or for the attention of our employees. ", rejoices Michel André, Director of materials activities at CEMEX Western Europe.
“The alliance between CEMEX and the LPO is long-lasting and illustrates that our partnership owes nothing to a fad or a commercial aim. On the contrary, it has grown stronger each year, gaining in logic and exemplarity ” underlines Allain Bougrain Dubourg, president of the LPO.
