BDR Thermea Group becomes a pioneer in the production of green hydrogen with an R&D center in Italy

Bassano del Grappa, place of self-production of green hydrogen Bassano del Grappa, in Italy, is the site of the biggest production plant of BDR Thermea. Since 2018, the group has produced its own electricity in Bassano del Grappa using 6 m² of solar panels on the roof of its factory. This electricity already powers the production of around 000 boilers per day, thereby avoiding the release of more than 4 tonnes of CO² per year.

Today, electrolysis equipment has been installed in Bassano, Italy. It transforms the electricity from its photovoltaic panels into hydrogen. This hydrogen will be used to test and pilot the development of 100% hydrogen and hydrogen / natural gas mixture prototypes in the R&D center dedicated to hydrogen boiler technology for the entire group.

“Enabling the global energy transition is the driving force behind BDR Thermea Group. Another concrete example is Bassano's self-production of green hydrogen. We have created a complete sustainable energy chain: we produce solar electricity, we use it to transform water into hydrogen by electrolysis, then we use this hydrogen to fuel our new innovations in our hydrogen test boilers ”, says Peter Snel, technical director of BDR Thermea Group.

BDR Thermea Group at the cutting edge of hydrogen boiler technology

Interest in hydrogen in domestic space heaters is growing rapidly in the EU, where 40% of primary energy consumption is used for thermal comfort and domestic hot water. Hydrogen can be stored for longer periods to compensate for seasonal fluctuations.

Since June 2019, BDR Thermea Group has been piloting the first real application of its high-efficiency and 100% hydrogen boiler, designed and developed in Bassano del Grappa in Italy and in Rozenburg in the Netherlands. Last November, the group became the first company in Europe to receive certification for the use of a hydrogen mixture in domestic boilers in the Netherlands. In addition, the company participates in the British Hy4Heat program and is actively exploring pilot projects on hydrogen throughout Europe.
