Burglary Protection Barometer 2024: stable trends despite persistent challenges

The results are clear: the risk of burglary is a major concern for the French, with 83% of them considering themselves concerned, or even very concerned (34%) by this threat. In fact, burglary is ahead of other risks such as fire, water damage, or even domestic accidents in the scale of concerns regarding domestic security. However, despite this omnipresent concern, only 1/4 of French people believe that their current equipment is very effective in deterring burglars. These data only underline the urgency of strengthening home security in a country where, according to Interstats data from the Ministry of the Interior, more than 500 burglaries are committed every day.

Moreover, when it comes to burglaries, the figures speak for themselves: for 44% of respondents, the main door is considered the most risky access point into a home. Moreover, let's not forget that criminals are capable of opening a standard door in less than 10 seconds using a simple screwdriver. The received idea that certain types of housing are less vulnerable does not hold, because in fact there are no significant differences depending on the type of housing, its location or the frequency of absence.

The barometer also reveals that 29% of French people have been victims of a burglary or attempted break-in of their main residence, which reinforces the feeling of insecurity. After a burglary, 2 out of 3 victims installed at least one piece of equipment to secure their home. The motion detector, the sound alarm and the multipoint lock remain the most common, with cameras and an increase in the power of the armored door.

However, less than 2 in 10 French people consider themselves well informed about security and protection systems, thus highlighting the growing need for awareness and information in this crucial area.

Furthermore, certifications and labels for safety equipment continue to be important criteria for consumers. Although equipment rates have remained stable over the last two years, 4 out of 10 French people plan to install new equipment within 3 years. Cameras, sound alarms and motion detectors are among the most considered equipment, despite some mistrust of them.
