At COP28, TotalEnergies signs an agreement for a wind project in Kazakhstan

This $1,4 billion investment contract was signed by the boss of TotalEnergies, Patrick Pouyanné, and the Minister of Energy of Kazakhstan, Almassadam Satkaliev, in the presence of the president of this country, Kassym-Jomart Tokaïev .

“The signing of this agreement will make it possible to launch the Mirny project which will contribute to the tripling of our electricity production from 33 TWh (in 2022, Editor’s note) to more than 100 TWh by 2030,” declared Mr. Pouyanné, whose the company produces electricity from wind and solar farms and gas-fired power plants.

Mr. Pouyanné further specified that his group “supports” the call launched Friday in Dubai by 110 countries to triple renewable energies by 2030.

The agreement on the Mirny project was signed at the site of the UN climate conference in Dubai, where states must agree on a global agreement to reduce carbon emissions and limit climate change caused by human activities .

Located in the Zhambyl region (southern Kazakhstan), the project involves the construction of an onshore wind farm with a capacity of 1 GW comprising 160 wind turbines associated with a 600 MWh battery storage system, used in addition to manage the intermittency of this energy.

This is "the largest wind project ever initiated in Kazakhstan", according to TotalEnergies, which plans to multiply its installed renewable capacities by 5, from 22 GW today to 100 GW in 2030.

The group, regularly criticized for its investments in fossil fuels, will develop the project, with a 60% stake, in partnership with the National Wealth Fund Samruk-Kazyna and the National Company KazMunayGas, which will each hold a 20% share. %. The agreement completes the 25-year electricity sales contract to the State of Kazakhstan announced in June by the group.

On the sidelines of the climate negotiations in Dubai, the COP is also an opportunity for many companies to make announcements on their environmental strategies.
