An unprecedented scientific council for the French Pavilion at the 2027 Venice International Architecture Biennale

This council (CNOA, Academy of Architecture, City of Architecture and Heritage, Network of Architecture Houses, Association of French Architects for Export) will have the mission of supporting the winning team in understanding the specific subject of this edition and its resonances in France, from 2026, as well as internationally.

In 2027, the 50th anniversary of the Architecture Act offers a unique opportunity to share feedback on territorial identity, the impact on housing, areas of concern, and crisis management. At a time when joint actions are shifting from planning to development, what should be the place of architecture in the world for the next 50 years?

Responsible for the French Pavilion at the Venice International Architecture Biennale under the joint supervision of the Ministry of Culture and the Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs, the French Institute launched the call for applications for the allocation of the curatorship of the 2027 editionOpen until September 22, 2025, the call will be open to applications from teams meeting the dual requirement of curatorial and scenographic skills.

For this special edition, an exceptional scientific council composed of the CNOA, the Academy of Architecture, the CAPA, the RMA and the AFEX, will support the organizer, as well as the winning curatorial team, in understanding the specific subject of this edition promoting architecture as a political and cultural object in the service of the general interest, and the development of resonances. Another particularity of the 2027 edition, the Pavilion's resonance actions will be deployed internationally, but also in the French regions of mainland France and overseas.

Other architectural stakeholders will be involved in the process, such as the Federation of Architecture, Urban Planning and Environment Councils (FNCAUE), the Interministerial Mission for the Quality of Public Constructions (MIQCP), the National Union of Architects' Unions and the Architecture Union, and associations (architects of buildings in France, heritage, etc.). Stakeholders in the city or construction sector (urban planners and landscapers) and partners of architects will also be invited to participate in this innovative cross-disciplinary proposal.

International architectural partners, including the Architects' Council of Europe (ACE) and the International Union of Architects (UIA), will also be involved. The 2027 project must firmly include an international and European dimension to reach a wide variety of audiences worldwide.

Architecture carries a strong, committed message: to create and adapt the living environment for all, while providing solutions for the future. Returning to this founding legislative text and its contemporary resonances will provide an opportunity to question public policies in light of climate, cultural, economic, and societal challenges. France established the principles of ambitious architecture in 1977: everyone has the right to quality architecture.

The ambition of the initiative led by the architectural ecosystem and the French Institute is to make the French Pavilion at Venice 2027 a platform to reaffirm the political, cultural, and social dimension of architecture, as a common good and a strategic lever in the face of contemporary changes. Showing in order to debate, in the spirit of the Biennale, this will be the challenge.

The Scientific Council is calling on all candidates: projects must be submitted before September 22.
