The Minister of Ecological Transition Barbara Pompili has "decided, with Rodolphe Alexandre" the president of the Guyana region, to replace a project for an oil-fired power station in Larivot, "to retain a 100% supply option based on liquid biomass, "according to a statement on Saturday.
"In a context of strong growth in electricity supply needs in Guyana and in view of the closure of the Dégrad heavy fuel oil plant in Cannes, it was essential to find a lasting solution without delay and to build another plant" , observed the minister in this press release.
"On the other hand, I considered that it was out of the question to bet on fuel oil, which is a polluting energy and emits a lot of CO². I therefore decided, with Rodolphe Alexandre, to reorient the planned power station until here to retain a 100% feed option based on liquid biomass, "she explains.
"The initial project provided for a power station running on light fuel oil, with commissioning scheduled for early 2024", specifies her ministry, according to which "Barbara Pompili will ensure that the biofuels used meet the sustainability criteria and comply with European directives" .
In particular, they must not come from raw materials "presenting a high risk of inducing changes in land use", excluding in particular palm oil and soya.
According to the government, the reorientation of the project should make it possible to "considerably reduce greenhouse gas emissions" and "will also greatly reduce emissions of nitrogen oxides (-64%) and sulfur oxides (-99,6 , XNUMX%) ".
