A mysterious monolith was discovered in the Nevada desert by Las Vegas police, and is sparking speculation among Internet users in the United States about its origin.
The rectangular parallelepiped entirely covered in mirrors was spotted this weekend in an area popular with hikers, about an hour north of the famous "sin city".
“We see a lot of weird things, (...) but look at this!”, the police commented on social networks on Monday.
This strange installation resembles many others, mysteriously appearing across the four corners of the globe since 2020.
At the time, a monolith discovered in a desert corner of Utah made headlines in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic. Since then, similar objects have appeared in the Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Canada and Great Britain.
Websites have inevitably been created to identify these enigmatic structures. And like the others, the Nevada monolith fuels all kinds of theories.
Offering left by extraterrestrials? Chest containing treasure? Just a joke? Speculation among American Internet users is rife.
But as in “2001: A Space Odyssey,” the Stanley Kubrick classic that popularized the image of the monolith in popular culture, the mystery is probably destined to remain unsolved.
