A metal envelope of 3.000 square meters for the new metro station in Rennes

2.758 square meters of metal mesh envelop, on the roof and on the facade, the new aerial metro station Cesson-Via Silva, in the city of Rennes (France). A major project signed by the architectural firms Anthracite, Ludovic Alexandre and Antoine Massinon Architectes.

The Cesson-Via Silva station on line B of the Rennes metro (France) is the first station of the future ViaSilva eco-city, currently under development. Located on an urban square, it is raised 9 meters by the viaduct over which the railway tracks pass and also serves as a viewpoint.

The ovoid-shaped station has been clad in natural-coloured anodized aluminum metal mesh. The metal ribbons wrap around the viaduct without touching the infrastructure. This configuration was made possible thanks to a system of beams acting as a support, which also frees up the interior space of the station for platforms, ticket offices and circulation areas. Oak wood panels have been fitted inside to counterbalance the stainless steel and glass. They bring warmth to the interior while acting as acoustic insulators.

To allow the realization of this metallic skin desired by Anthracite Architecture, Ludovic Alexandre and Antoine Massinon Architectes; and according to the precise architectural plans, the company Codina Architectural collaborated with Maille Metal Design to design a custom envelope by combining several densities of spiral metal mesh. The idea was to achieve a specific design by playing on the thickness of the mesh, the transparencies, so that each panel could then be fixed to the structure using the TF-60 fixing system, also designed by Codina Architectural . The result is a façade and roof with a total surface area of 2 m758 of spiral metal mesh ribbons offering a feeling of lightness and a unique and harmonious design.
