A 2024 Olympics construction site briefly occupied by undocumented workers

At the call of the CNT-SO (National Confederation of Workers - Solidarité Ouvrière), around fifty demonstrators, according to this union, entered the site. A first operation took place on October 17 on the same site, located in the north of the capital.

Bouygues, the construction group responsible for the construction of the Arena Porte de la Chapelle, "refuses" that undocumented workers who have submitted an application for a residence permit to the prefecture "and who, according to the protocol (signed on October 17 , editor's note), must be kept in employment, return to work on its + exemplary site +", accused the CNT in a press release.

“Twelve to fifteen workers working on this site are affected,” union member Etienne Deschamps told AFP.

The demonstrators left the site at the beginning of the afternoon to be received at the socialist town hall of the 18th arrondissement to discuss the situation of these workers with elected officials and representatives of Bouygues, according to this trade unionist, who said "rather satisfied” with the discussions.

“We fully support their fight and we will help resolve the situation,” Emmanuel Grégoire, first deputy (PS) to the mayor of Paris, who chaired this meeting, told AFP.

Bouygues, contacted by AFP, did not wish to comment.

Hundreds of undocumented workers went on strike on October 17 to demand their regularization. They had invested in around thirty construction, logistics, cleaning and even distribution companies as well as Olympic construction sites.

On December 6, the Bobigny industrial tribunal will examine the situation of ten former undocumented workers who have sued construction companies to have their work recognized on the Olympic Games sites.
