The world's largest indoor ski slope opened in Shanghai on Friday, September 6, the latest megaproject aimed at satisfying China's growing love of winter sports.
China's ski industry has been booming since Beijing hosted the 2022 Winter Olympics, coupled with huge government subsidies and strong interest from a growing middle class.
China is the world leader in indoor skiing, taking half of the global top 10, according to Shanghai-based Daxue Consulting.
By 9am on Friday, temperatures were reaching 30°C on the faux-Alpine-looking square hosting the opening ceremony. But once inside the complex, the mercury was dropping well below zero.
Shaped like a glacier and covering an area of 90.000 square meters, the L*SNOW Indoor Skiing Theme Resort cannot go unnoticed on the coast of Lingan, about an hour and a half from the center of Shanghai.
The indoor track was certified Friday by the Guinness Book of Records as the largest in the world, ahead of the one in Harbin, also in China.
Originally planned for 2019, the opening of the center has been postponed several times.
