Window Market in France: Eco-design and innovation are reshaping the sector's competitiveness, according to MSI Reports

Driven by the demands for environmental performance in buildings, window manufacturers are adopting eco-design. This is particularly true for large public and private construction projects, where windows and doors with an improved carbon footprint become a tool for offsetting emissions from other, more polluting components.

This dynamic reinforces the role of the window industry in the overall environmental performance of buildings, both new and renovated.

In this context, window manufacturers/assemblers – and their suppliers (PVC and aluminum system suppliers, flat glass manufacturers, etc.) – are encouraged to increase the proportion of recycled materials in their products. This development requires the structuring of recovery, dismantling, and recycling channels for end-of-life window and door frames, similar to the initiatives undertaken by Veka (Veka Recyclage), Pando (Pando Recyclage), Groupe Liébot (Coralium), as well as Herige and Fenêtréa (Menrec).

According to MSI Reports, this increase in complexity (ability to recover end-of-life joinery, recycled content of frames, drafting of individual FDES or even eventually "site-by-site" FDES, etc.), combined with the progressive tightening of regulatory constraints, can constitute a decisive competitive advantage for the most structured manufacturers, capable of mobilizing the necessary human and financial resources, and able to promote their environmental actions and performance through their communication.

The research firm MSI Reports also highlights the emergence of vacuum glazing, particularly the Fineo solution (AGC Glass). Combining high thermal performance (comparable to triple glazing), low thickness, and reduced weight, this disruptive technology opens up new possibilities. Particularly well-suited to the renovation of historic/listed buildings, vacuum glazing simultaneously addresses several challenges: building thermal performance, improved working conditions for installation teams on site, reduced consumption of raw materials needed for frame manufacturing, and a smaller carbon footprint for window and door systems.

According to MSI Reports, manufacturers' ability to integrate eco-design, structure recycling channels, and adopt innovations like vacuum glazing can ultimately constitute significant competitive advantages. The widespread adoption of these solutions, combined with effective communication, should strengthen the competitiveness of the most committed players and sustainably shape the market offering.
