When sun protection becomes part of the architecture: the renovated Konvikt in Chur

The building is considered one of the few important contemporary witnesses to the sculptural direction of that era; its sculptural figure in exposed concrete, the reaction to the difficult topography and the influence of Le Corbusier on the design of light and proportions give it its singular character.

The Konvikt of the Cantonal School of Grisons is one of the most remarkable buildings in the city of Chur. After approximately 50 years of operation, the residential and community house has been extensively renovated and adapted to current needs – with the aim of preserving its architectural quality while ensuring its use for decades to come.

A solitary figure of post-war Grisons modernism

The Konvikt originated from an architectural competition in 1963 and was designed and built by Otto Glaus, Ruedi Lienhard, and Sep Marti between 1967 and 1969. The building is considered an important contemporary example of post-war modernism in Chur. Its sculptural form in staggered exposed concrete responds precisely to the challenging topography of the slope while also referencing the architectural approach of its designer, Otto Glaus, who had previously worked for Le Corbusier.

References to the monastic complex of Sainte-Marie de La Tourette, the Modulor theory of proportions, and the principle of "undulation"—that is, the vertical division of windows into structured walls of light—are particularly noticeable. It is precisely this understanding of architecture as the interaction between space, façade, and natural light that gives the Konvikt its singularity even today.

Renovation respecting the existing building

The renovation, overseen by the Swiss architectural firm Pablo Horváth, thus navigated a complex landscape: maintaining architectural quality, complying with current legal requirements, and adapting to contemporary usage needs. The canton's "less is more" approach relied on minimal yet effective interventions and a sensitive approach to the existing urban fabric. Consequently, the overall project encompassed the renewal of the building envelope, technical installations, interior fittings, and infrastructure adjustments to meet current standards.

Sun protection as an integral part of the architectural concept

In this context, solar protection takes on a function rather than a mere technique.
