Up to 60% of heat recovered from wastewater: a first demonstration in a Parisian building

This solution, launched today in a 42-unit residence, could allow for significant savings, better control of tenants' expenses, while increasing the share of renewable and recovered energy (RRE) in the energy balance of buildings.

Thus, the installation should allow for the recovery of up to 60% of the heat contained in wastewater, at an average temperature between 20 and 30°C depending on the flow rate and usage. The objective of this demonstrator is to validate the feasibility of the system in order to achieve energy savings on domestic hot water (DHW) of between 25 and 45%.

RegenEAU is an innovative solution for recovering energy from domestic wastewater, particularly greywater (showers, sinks, washing machines, kitchens) and blackwater (toilets). It captures the heat contained in this wastewater before it is discharged, in order to preheat clean water or supply a heating network or a domestic hot water tank.

The system adapts perfectly to existing installations in buildings. It is based on a high-performance heat exchanger that is in contact with wastewater, the secondary hydraulic circuit (clean water or heat transfer fluid) and intelligent regulation to optimize efficiency and adapt to the intermittent nature of the flows.

The technology is based on three patented innovations:

• Solid/liquid separation of wastewater to optimize heat exchange
• Dynamic temporary storage tanks, allowing the capture of heat from the water
• A connected system (IoT) that allows the integration of models and the anticipation of hot water production and maintenance in connection with artificial intelligence (AI)

Therefore, the system can be installed in a technical room, crawl space, or at the base of a building, parallel to the wastewater network. No contact between wastewater and clean water is possible, guaranteeing maximum sanitary safety.

This innovation will thus offer a new energy supply that will be both sustainable and competitive because it is uncorrelated with fossil fuel price fluctuations and eligible for Energy Savings Certificates (CEE).
