Trump believes that investment companies in the US should not buy single-family homes.

"For a very long time, owning a home was considered the pinnacle of the American dream," the president emphasized on his Truth Social platform.

"This dream is becoming increasingly unattainable for too many people, especially young Americans," he lamented.

"It is for this reason, and many others, that I am immediately taking steps to prohibit large institutional investors from buying more single-family homes," he added, calling on Congress to enshrine this principle in law.

The US president, whose party has recently suffered electoral setbacks, is under pressure to address Americans' concerns about the cost of living.

Following his message, Democratic Senator Elizabeth Warren criticized him for "not having lifted a finger yet to lower housing costs for Americans."

"I have been campaigning for years to prevent Wall Street from buying homes. Enough talk - Trump now needs to mobilize his own party" to pass a law that could be supported by both sides of the House, the congresswoman said in a statement.

Large property owners took a hit on Wall Street after this announcement: Invitation Homes lost 6,01%, American Homes 4 Rent 4,32% and AvalonBay Communities 2,28%.

The Blackstone investment fund, which holds a large portfolio of properties, was also affected, losing 5,58% on Wednesday.
