Donald Trump's administration, known for its reluctance to embrace renewable energy, announced Thursday that it was ending a federal subsidy program for installing solar panels on the roofs of hundreds of thousands of low-income American homes.
It was the Inflation Reduction Act, Democrat Joe Biden's massive climate bill passed in 2022, that established this photovoltaic support program, expected to benefit more than 900.000 families through various structures.
But the funds dedicated to this system were canceled by Donald Trump's sweeping budget bill passed by the US Congress in early July, Lee Zeldin, head of the federal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), said Thursday. He assured X that he had no choice but to end this subsidy system.
Lee Zeldin also accuses it of inefficiency due to the large number of "intermediaries" between the federal government and the final beneficiaries.
According to the expert group Atlas Public Policy, only $53 million of the $7 billion initially planned has been spent.
"Donald Trump wants to illegally kill this system to protect the obscene profits of his friends in the oil and gas industry," left-wing Senator Bernie Sanders denounced in a statement.
Since January, Donald Trump's administration has taken steps to thwart renewable energy projects while facilitating the exploitation of hydrocarbons.
He also plans to end regulations on greenhouse gas emissions, arguing in a recent report that climate change could have benefits.
