The shutter market in France: motorization at the heart of the issues

A now widespread use of motors

Approximately 80% of custom-made roller shutters sold in France are motorized. This figure approaches 100% for renovation-type roller shutters (external box), tunnel box, and half-lintel type. Outside of large-scale multi-unit residential projects, motorization has thus become the standard in this market.

In renovation projects, motorizing has become automatic.

In renovation projects, radio-controlled motorization has become the standard solution. According to MSI Reports, 95% of newly sold renovation roller shutters are motorized, and the radio control rate (when motorized) is 92%. Therefore, the search for added value involves other ways to enhance the product mix: solar-powered motors, integrated insect screens, home automation options, micro-perforated slats, etc.

Solar-powered motors have been steadily gaining ground in recent years. MSI Reports estimates that 60% of renovation roller shutters sold in 2025 will be equipped with them, up 10 points compared to 2023. This solution, which requires neither chasing nor electrical connection, appeals to both installers and end customers: its higher cost is offset by the absence of wiring work.

Conversely, roller shutters without an external housing are rarely sold with a motor that is independent of the electrical grid. This is because the photovoltaic module then needs to be mounted on the facade, and the "ease of installation" argument is virtually irrelevant. Furthermore, solar-powered motors have no market penetration whatsoever in the tunnel and half-lintel housing segments. MSI Reports, however, observes embryonic developments in traditional roller shutters and even integrated window and door units (for renovation projects).

Hinged shutters: an untapped potential

Motorized shutters remain very rare. This is partly due to technical limitations, notably the risk of damage to the articulated arms when operated in strong winds. Above all, the additional cost associated with motorization (around €1.000 including VAT or more for the end consumer) more or less doubles the final installation price, which proves prohibitive in the vast majority of cases.

MSI Reports estimates that only 2% of hinged shutters are sold motorized by manufacturers. This is a disappointing figure, given that switching to electric operation is one of the main motivations for consumers replacing their hinged shutters with roller shutters. Furthermore, there remains in France a pool of tens of millions of manual hinged shutters, often quite old, that should be replaced or modernized.
