The office in 2050: how neural implants, AI, and virtual reality will transform work

International Workplace Group (IWG) is the world’s leading hybrid work platform, with brands such as Regus and Spaces.

Both HR professionals and employees believe that workplace technology will be unrecognizable by 2050 (68% and 72% respectively), as innovations like neurotechnologies, already being developed by companies such as Synchron and Elon Musk's Neuralink, move closer to practical applications. Intelligent systems are also expected to automate complex workflows, personalize environments, and significantly accelerate decision-making.

AI and immersive technologies will transform the way we work

Artificial intelligence will continue to transform the world of work. Both HR professionals and employees believe that AI and automation will redefine the majority of office functions (71% and 73%, respectively). Approximately two-thirds think that AI will determine the optimal time and place for collaboration (64% of employees, versus 69% of HR professionals).

AI-enhanced training programs are already accelerating learning in schools, universities, and businesses, allowing younger generations to progress much faster than previous ones. AI is following an exponential innovation curve, creating efficiency gains that free individuals to focus on what humans do best: thinking creatively, solving problems, and generating new ideas.

As a result, the pace of work is expected to accelerate significantly, with 74% of employees and 70% of HR managers anticipating a significant increase in speed of execution in the coming decades.

Long commutes and the traditional "9am-17pm" workday are destined to disappear.

The study also shows that working patterns will continue to evolve significantly over the next 25 years. Nearly 7 out of 10 HR managers and employees believe that long daily commutes and the traditional 9-to-17 workday will have disappeared by 2050 (69% and 68%, respectively).

Instead, work will increasingly take place across a network of locations rather than in a single central office. Nearly 70% of HR managers say work will be done in multiple locations, a figure that rises to 75% among employees. 64% of employees expect hybrid work to become the standard model, compared to 78% of HR managers.

Both employees and HR managers also agree that strict policies mandating a return to the office will have disappeared by 2050, with organizations increasingly prioritizing flexibility and employee autonomy (66% and 63%).

Smarter environments and human-technology integration

In addition to neurotechnologies, immersive collaboration tools are expected to play a central role in the transformation of workplaces.

Virtual and augmented reality meeting rooms, capable of bringing together remote and in-person colleagues, come in second among the most anticipated innovations. Nearly 7 out of 10 HR managers and employees predict that these technologies will replace many traditional office interactions, from informal exchanges to physical meetings, by 2050 (70% and 69%, respectively).

According to employees, workspaces will also become more responsive, intuitive, and tailored to human needs. Office environments should automatically adjust lighting and working conditions to each individual's biological rhythm (28%); integrate systems capable of detecting fatigue and recommending breaks or rest (30%); and offer fully interactive, cloud-connected workspaces where walls become touch-sensitive digital surfaces (24%).

The office of the future: flexible, human-centered, and connected to nature

While technology will transform the way we work, tomorrow's workspaces should also become more human-centered and focused on well-being.

Among the most popular office concepts are: family-friendly spaces with on-site childcare areas (23% of HR managers and 30% of employees), and multifunctional environments that can evolve throughout the day to accommodate work, learning, socializing and rest (23% vs 30% respectively).

Many also envision offices designed around nature, incorporating green walls, interior gardens and areas bathed in natural light to create healthier and more inspiring working environments for both HR managers and employees (22% vs. 28%).

According to the latest INSEE* study, teleworking has become firmly established in French companies and can be a driver of performance. Between 2019 and 2022, companies that made greater use of teleworking recorded higher productivity gains: 10 additional points of teleworking are associated with a productivity increase of 0,7 to 1 point.

Work-life balance and flexibility will define the workforce of tomorrow.

In the future, flexibility is expected to become a key factor in attracting and retaining talent. Three-quarters of HR managers and employees believe it will be essential for companies in 2050, as employees place increasing importance on work-life balance and well-being (75% for both groups).

When asked about their priorities if they were to run a company themselves, many responded that they would primarily seek to enable employees to choose how and where they work, to strengthen well-being programs, and to create environments that promote engagement, loyalty, and productivity.
