The Minister of Housing wants to increase subsidies for electrification

"We are working to target all the aid that is currently available for renovation towards electrification," he indicated on RMC, while Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu has given "instructions" to his ministers to identify priority actions to electrify the economy and reduce dependence on imported hydrocarbons.

For individual homes, the aid could be used to install electric radiators, "but also to replace your fossil fuel boiler with what are called air-to-water heat pumps, which will heat your historical radiators," explained Mr. Jeanbrun.

The aim is to grant additional bonuses for renovation aid if electrification is planned, his office told AFP.

A "heating boost" bonus has existed since October 2025, to help households replace their oil or gas boiler with an electric heat pump.

Regarding social housing, a plan is in place with social landlords to have "replaced all heating systems either with district heating or with electric heating" within "a few years", the minister said.

In the stock of individual houses, social landlords will no longer replace boilers with fossil fuels, but with electricity and "almost entirely" with heat pumps, Mr. Jeanbrun's office emphasizes.

For the collective housing stock, a study is underway to determine which buildings can be connected to a district heating network, electrified during renovations.

Gas is still predominantly used for heating in social housing, in 55% of homes, and fuel oil in less than 1%, according to 2023 figures from the National Authority for the Control of Social Housing (Ancols).

The State's National Low Carbon Strategy (SNBC) plans to replace gas boilers with decarbonized heating in 85.000 social housing units per year by 2030.
