The French want to feel safer at home

More than 3 out of 4 French people fear burglaries – 61% of them would be interested in on-demand remote monitoring services. Resideo is launching First Alert Remote, an on-demand remote monitoring service, offering installers an innovative monitoring option to offer their customers.

In light of this, home security is a growing concern, and more and more homeowners are looking for ways to feel safe at home, especially as the warmer weather and summer approaches. In its latest study, conducted by OpinionWay in March 2025, Resideo sheds light on the behaviors and expectations of French people regarding the protection of their homes.

Burglary, fire, accident: concern grows in France

When asked about their overall sense of security, half of homeowners in metropolitan France expressed increasing concern over the past two years (49%), across all generations. However, this concern is growing more among those under 35 (71%), compared to 48% among those over 50. This increase is also slightly more pronounced among homeowners living in densely populated areas: 52% in urban areas with 100.000 inhabitants or more, compared to 47% in less populated areas.

While burglary remains the main source of concern (79%), 73% of respondents fear it will occur while they are away, and 51% while they are at home. Among other fears related to home security, the risk of accidents comes in second place, along with fires (47%) and carbon monoxide leaks (18%).

To address and protect against these risks, a third of homeowners have taken steps by installing a connected security system (either themselves or through a professional). Whether it's an intruder alarm, video surveillance/remote monitoring, a smoke detector, or a water leak detector, connectivity and compatibility with existing equipment are now prerequisites—and this applies to all generations, not just the younger generation. In fact, half of respondents (all ages) consider control via a smartphone app to be an important feature when purchasing or upgrading their security system.

Helping installers equip their customers, connect them and… À la carte!

Among those already equipped, 54% plan to strengthen their system in the next two years. Security professionals therefore have a key role to play in evolving existing systems to meet market expectations. Today, payment for professional remote monitoring is made almost exclusively on a regular basis: 66% pay a monthly subscription, and 32% an annual subscription. However, a majority of affected homeowners want more flexibility. Thus, 61% say they are interested in an on-demand remote monitoring service, paying only for the services actually provided. Interest in pay-as-you-go is particularly strong among young homeowners under 35 (83%), but remains high among other generations (66% of 35-49 year-olds and 47% of older ones). This trend echoes a practice already widespread in other sectors (banking, energy management, connected objects, etc.).

It is in this context that Resideo announces the launch of its brand new service under the brand name First Alert: an “À la carte” remote monitoring service. This service will allow professional security installers to offer their clients flexible, professional monitoring tailored to their needs. Unlike traditional subscriptions, “On Demand” services allow end users to pay only for the periods when remote monitoring is activated – thus offering a tailor-made security service while controlling their budget.

Methodology

The survey was conducted among 1.025 French people aged 18 and over who own their primary residence, using the quota method (gender, age, socio-professional category, urban area category, region of residence, type and surface area of the dwelling). The interviews were conducted from March 3 to 7, 2025.
