The French and the recycling of photovoltaic panels in 2025

On the occasion of World Recycling Day, which took place on March 18, 2025, Soren presents the results of the 4th edition of its barometer.

Increased confidence in solar energy

Solar energy continues to grow in France, with the rate of households installing photovoltaic panels steadily increasing. According to the latest study conducted on the perception and adoption of this technology by OpinionWay, one in ten French people now has a solar installation, a figure that has increased compared to previous years (7% in 2021, this rate of installation increases slightly each year). Furthermore, a quarter of French people (25%) are already equipped or are considering doing so, demonstrating a growing interest in this renewable energy source.

We also note that the French have great confidence in photovoltaic solar panels, which are among the top 5 most popular renewable energies (77%).

A large majority also recognize their contribution to the production of green electricity (80%). This dynamic is particularly marked among younger generations: 21% of those under 35 express their intention to equip themselves soon, illustrating a strong commitment to the energy transition.

Challenges to be met in terms of information in favor of the growth of a committed sector

Despite these advances, the level of information on photovoltaic panel recycling remains a key issue. While a majority of French people know that the panels are partially recyclable (61%), there are still misconceptions to combat regarding the recyclability of the panels, even though 94% of them are actually recycled. However, younger generations stand out for their greater knowledge of the subject: 56% of those under 35 identify that recycling is done in France and 67% recognize the industry's commitment to this approach.

Access to accurate information on solar panel recycling appears to be a key factor in encouraging their adoption. Indeed, 66% of French people believe that the recyclability of panels is a key criterion for considering their installation. However, a majority of respondents highlighted a lack of information on this subject (77%).

Despite this, perceptions of the benefits of solar power remain strong: the French are convinced that this sector generates economic value (66%) and contributes to job creation (67%). Furthermore, more than half of those surveyed (55%) recognize that photovoltaic panels can be reused for a second life.

These data highlight the growth in solar panel adoption, but also the need for a collective effort to better inform about their recycling. With growing demand, particularly among younger generations, and strong commitment from the sector, solar energy is emerging as a pillar of the energy transition in France.
