The DIY and gardening market is expected to decline by 2,7% in 2025

In 2025, the market reached a turnover of 32,5 billion euros, according to figures from the consumer research institute NielsenIQ. In detail, DIY generated 24,2 billion euros (-3,2%) and gardening 8,3 billion (-1,1%).

Nine out of ten French people said they had reduced their spending in 2025, "with marked trade-offs on leisure, home equipment and food", the institute notes.

"The DIY/gardening market is simultaneously suffering from the contraction of purchasing power and the real estate crisis," analyzes Xavier Ségalié, Managing Director of NielsenIQ France, quoted in the press release.

In the DIY sector, the hardest-hit categories were tools (-10,7%), lighting (-2,1%), and plumbing (-1,5%). However, the heatwave led to a surge in sales of fans (+75%) and air conditioners (+72%). Alarm sales also jumped by 30%.

On the garden side, potting soils are progressing, by 8%, as are robotic lawnmowers (+8,4%) and blowers (+11%).

The institute notes that "natural gardening is becoming a lasting trend" in the potting soil sector, with two-thirds of sales generated by products usable in organic farming (UAB).

Although the majority of French people interviewed for the study are pessimistic about the future state of the economy, they reveal projects likely to support sales: 22% are considering a property purchase, 27% renovations in their kitchen or bathroom, 15% heating work and 17% insulation.
