Technal joinery at the heart of a contemporary metamorphosis in Yerres (91)

For the project owner, Emmanuel Bourdaud: “Our specifications were clear. We wanted a larger, brighter, and more energy-efficient home. The architecture firm went beyond our expectations. Today, we find ourselves in a house designed with us and for us, according to our needs.”

In this comprehensive renovation, TECHNAL windows and curtain walls play a key role: large fixed frames paired with opaque operable panels, reimagined dormer windows, and a glazed extension housing the kitchen. These openings, with their clean lines, reinforce the contemporary character sought by the architect. They also eliminate the house's single orientation, as each space is now flooded with natural light and opens onto the landscape. These high-performance solutions in natural anodized aluminum were manufactured by TECHNAL's Certified Aluminum Fabricator, CFIM. They are the result of close collaboration with the architect, each challenging the other to create the most suitable custom-made openings for this project. Respecting the existing structure while incorporating modern design elements, they contribute perfectly to the contemporary and sustainable transformation of this 1970s house. The renovation completely redesigned it, creating open-plan living spaces and optimizing the attic. The living space has been maximized, reaching 180 m2 with 4 bedrooms. It is organized over three levels, including the basement which has been excavated to integrate new functions, notably a music room.

Last February, this renovation project won an award at the TECHNAL Aluminium Architecture Awards in the Individual Housing Rehabilitation category. The jury highlighted the refined design, the particularly successful overall color scheme, and the well-executed management of space. The interventions are understated, free of excess, and always perfectly judged!

Revisited dormer windows

In an effort to reinterpret the suburban style while respecting the traditional codes imposed by regulations, the firm revisited the four dormer windows. The SOLEAL windows (1,30 m wide x 2 m high), surface-mounted on the timber frame, minimize their visual impact and thus lighten the facades. Slender and with fine lines, these windows lend a minimalist yet contemporary character to the house. The glazed area is maximized, flooding the rooms with light and offering expansive views of the hillsides and the surrounding landscape. For maximum protection of family members and guests, the dormer windows are fitted with TECHNAL glass balustrades (Juliet Balcony).

Controlled natural ventilation, sculpted light

All other SOLEAL windows are installed flush with the facade to minimize their visual impact. These large fixed frames, which maximize solar gain, are combined with Flap opening windows to facilitate ventilation (W 1,6 x H 1,5 m and W 0,4 x H 1,5 m). Against this monochromatic facade, only two elements create a visual contrast: the TECHNAL windows in natural anodized aluminum, which display different patterns throughout the day, and the light-colored render.

Indoor or outdoor cooking?

On the garden side, the timber-framed extension houses a kitchen that opens generously onto the outdoors. Although facing north, this glazed façade, constructed with TECHNAL curtain walls and fitted with triple glazing, ensures thermal comfort in all seasons. Installed as an exterior wall, this curtain wall disappears from view from the inside, revealing only the timber frame. Bathed in natural light, the room seems to float in the middle of the garden, as if the boundary between inside and outside has vanished.
