Sade, a subsidiary of the NGE Group, will build the first water treatment plant on the island of Santo Antão, Cape Verde

SADE, a subsidiary of NGE, continues its expansion in Cape Verde and announces that it has won a contract for the sanitation of the island of Santo Antão. Awarded by the Agência Nacional Águas e Saneamento (ANAS) and financed by the Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa (BADEA), this project will provide the island with the necessary infrastructure for wastewater treatment and thus preserve its terrestrial and marine environment.

The Cape Verde archipelago faces major sanitation challenges with implications for public health, environmental preservation, and the country's economic development. In Santo Antão, freshwater resources are particularly scarce, and their quality is gradually deteriorating due to overexploitation of groundwater and saltwater infiltration.

As part of this contract, awarded by ANAS, SADE will build a treatment plant with a capacity of 400 m3/day, two pumping stations and 20 km of wastewater networks. The treated water will be stored in lagoons of approximately 1.500 m2, also built by SADE, to be subsequently reused for irrigation purposes or for cleaning roads, for example. This project serves a dual objective: to put an end to the discharge of untreated water into the environment and to promote its reuse.

Studies will begin at the beginning of April 2025, and the work will last 18 months, until the end of 2026.

More than 10 years of SADE's commitment to drinking water and sanitation in Cape Verde

In Cape Verde, SADE has been supporting development in the areas of water supply and sanitation for over a decade. In Santiago, the company designed and installed fire protection networks at a hydrocarbon storage site, built a wastewater treatment plant in Assomada, and deployed drinking water and sanitation networks.

In Sal and São Vicente, SADE contributed to strengthening the water supply by building two desalination plants, thus responding to the challenges related to water resource management on these islands.
