In France, ROCKWOOL is delivering on its commitments to reduce the environmental footprint of its operations. As early as 2015, the manufacturer converted one of its three production lines to electric melting technology to replace coke-fired melting. Continuing this approach, the company recently announced a new €100 million investment to electrify the other two production lines at its Puy-de-Dôme site.
In 2024, ROCKWOOL France also notes progress on its CSR objectives:
19% reduction in CO2 emissions between 2023 and 2024
Between 2023 and 2024, CO2 emissions from the Saint-Eloy-les-Mines site decreased by 19%. These results are the result of the site's excellent energy performance of 2,39 MWh/AGW, representing a reduction of almost 5% over 4 years. The Saint-Eloy-les-Mines site already has a photovoltaic panel installation, in line with the group's climate objectives to reduce the energy footprint of ROCKWOOL sites worldwide. This momentum will continue with the installation of additional photovoltaic panels, with final deployment planned for 2026.
More than 4.000 tonnes of rock wool recycled thanks to Rockcycle
A pioneer in materials recycling, ROCKWOOL has, since 2012 in France, developed Rockcycle, a collection and recycling service for stone wool products from construction, renovation, and demolition sites. In 2024, more than 4.000 tons were recycled in France, bringing the total to 8.000 tons over five years. Waste sent to landfill also decreased by 3% between 2023 and 2024. ROCKWOOL France is a member of VALOBAT, the approved eco-organization that offers multi-material solutions for the recovery of construction waste.
An ongoing commitment to employee safety
Employee safety and well-being remain a priority for ROCKWOOL. Thanks to the implementation of a prevention strategy, including five sessions dedicated to workplace safety, the number of serious accidents was reduced to zero by 5 at the Saint-Éloy-les-Mines site.
Decarbonization of logistics with FRET21
By joining the EVE program's FRET21 scheme, ROCKWOOL is actively committed to reducing the environmental impact of its transport, by adopting concrete initiatives to reduce CO2 emissions and promote sustainable solutions.
The group's CSR progress at the global level
ROCKWOOL Global measures its sustainability progress using two methodologies: those aligned with the UN's 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and those validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), an organization that certifies that companies' emissions reduction targets are scientifically aligned with the Paris Agreement.
2030 Sustainable Development Goals: ROCKWOOL Global is ahead of the curve in reducing its Scope 2 and 1 CO2 emissions intensity (-23%). The Danish group is making rapid progress in water resource management, with a 17% reduction in water use per tonne of stone wool produced. The manufacturer has also expanded its recycling offering to 30 countries.
With the SBTi interim targets to be achieved by 2034, the group has already reduced its absolute GHG emissions (Scopes 18 and 1) by 2%, almost half of its 38% reduction target, ahead of the Scope 3 emissions target.
