Reims Cathedral was evacuated for a few hours on Sunday, June 7, after a "strong smell of burning" was reported, but no fire was found, the city hall told AFP, confirming information from the daily newspaper L'Union.
According to an inspection carried out inside the building by firefighters, "there is no proven risk of fire at the cathedral level," the city hall stated.
According to her, drone checks of the exterior of the monument and the surrounding area, including the nearby Tau Palace, also detected "no anomalies".
The monument remained closed to the public for a few hours on Sunday from midday, but reopened shortly before 15:00 PM, according to the same source.
Emergency services patrols are being "intensified" as a security measure on Sunday afternoon.
Notre-Dame Cathedral in Reims, whose construction began in the 13th century, was the site of the coronation of several kings of France.
It had been heavily damaged during the First World War.
Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1991, it welcomes some 1,5 million visitors each year, according to figures published on the city of Reims' website.
It is bordered by the Tau Palace, which now houses a museum.
