Presidential election 2027: the CRE wants to meet with the main political parties

The Energy Regulatory Commission (CRE) intends to contribute to the debates on the energy future of France in the lead-up to the 2027 presidential election.

"As guarantor of the proper functioning of French electricity and gas energy systems, the CRE is committed to providing independent and technical expertise to contribute to the democratic debate," the independent administrative authority explained in a statement published Thursday.

With this in mind, the CRE will propose meetings with the main political parties in the coming weeks. It also remains "available to all political groups wishing to discuss these issues," drawing in particular on its most recent work.

French energy policy at a "pivotal moment"

The CRE justifies this initiative by stating that "France's energy policy is at a pivotal moment." Several challenges must now be addressed jointly: reviving investment, maintaining and developing the grid, continuing decarbonization, electrification, and "technological choices and economic optimization."

The authority believes that these different challenges "must be considered as a whole."

Energy occupies a significant place in the budget of French people and remains at the heart of many divisive issues. Support for renewable or fossil fuels, as well as the role of nuclear power in the energy mix, have in particular given rise to heated political debates in recent years.

Four major regulatory missions

The Energy Regulatory Commission reminds us that it is responsible for regulating electricity and gas networks and infrastructure, but also for ensuring the proper functioning of energy markets.

It also ensures the implementation of the main support mechanisms for renewable energies and helps to inform the public debate on major energy issues.
