While Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo wants to keep the Olympic rings on the Eiffel Tower after the Games, the International Paralympic Committee said on Monday September 2 that it wanted to have "a place where the Agitos can stay in the city."
These red, blue and green crescents which symbolize the Paralympic Games, called "Agitos" ("I move") are installed on the upper facade of the Arc de Triomphe and face the Champs-Elysées.
"There is a lot of debate about where the rings should stay, and we should not forget the Agitos," IPC spokesman Craig Spence said at a press briefing.
"I would really like us to have a place where the Agitos can stay here in the city to celebrate what I think is, by far, the most spectacular Paralympic Games in our history," he added.
"At every Games, we're always looking at where the Agitos can be put," Spence said, citing Tokyo as an example, where "there are still a lot of Agitos in the Japanese capital" three years after the 2021 Games.
Anne Hidalgo revealed to the daily newspaper Ouest France on Saturday that the Olympic rings would remain on the first floor of the Eiffel Tower, without mentioning any consultation on the subject.
"As mayor of Paris, the decision is mine and I have the agreement of the IOC. So yes, they will stay on the Eiffel Tower," she said.
A decision contested by the resigning Minister of Culture Rachida Dati, who called for "consultations" on the subject.
