Local elections 2026: Energy-efficient renovation of school buildings, a major issue for the next term

While the State aims to renovate 10.000 educational establishments by 2027 and 40.000 by 2034, a survey produced by the research firm Akéa Énergies, specializing in energy management and decarbonization solutions, highlights the strategic weight of the energy consumption of the school stock in local finances.

She reveals, in particular, that:

• Schools alone account for 29,4% of the energy consumption of municipalities, constituting the largest expenditure item for them, ahead of sports facilities and administrative buildings;
• Heating accounts for more than three-quarters of the energy needs of school buildings, with thermal comfort being even more crucial in rooms accommodating young children;
• In 2023, water and energy consumption reached 180 euros per year per student, a situation that weighs on local budgets.
