Metro, RER: "Major" renovation work planned for the Paris region's transport network in 2026

"Major works are planned to regenerate and modernize the Ile-de-France transport network by 2030," which is the second densest network in the world after Tokyo, and the fourth largest, Grégoire de Lasteyrie, vice-president of Ile-de-France Mobilités (IDFM), the transport authority in the capital region, told the press.

Among the most notable disruptions were the closure of the Nation station on the RER A for two summer months, and the interruption of line C between Austerlitz and western Paris from July 15 to August 22.

On the metro side, the entire Line 12, which serves the Montparnasse and Saint-Lazare stations, will be closed after 22 p.m. "two to three times a week" for six months, from January to June. Furthermore, passengers using Line 8 will no longer have access to the République station for nine months, from July 22, 2026, to April 2027.

These works, many of which are linked to the adaptation of infrastructure for the gradual arrival of new rolling stock (such as Alstom's MF19 on eight metro lines), amount to a total of 3,8 billion euros in 2026, IDFM indicated.

"There will always be alternative solutions," replacement buses, put in place for those who need to travel at those times," promised Mr. de Lasteyrie, with RATP committing to try to better coordinate the stops of its replacement buses with those of its normal bus network, while SNCF will try in particular to improve "signage".

All operators stress the absolute necessity of these works on aging mass transport infrastructures, in order to make them more reliable, allow for increased frequencies, and adapt to climate change: installation of more resilient catenaries for the SNCF, securing RER C stations against flooding and Seine floods.

The works will also affect the tramway, which is newer. Line T1, inaugurated in 1992, will be closed between Bobigny and Noisy-le-Sec from June 1st to August 31st, and between Asnières and La Courneuve from July 13th to August 28th.
