Macron convenes ecological planning council on Monday to signal "remobilization"

This meeting on Monday morning, with around fifteen ministers, the first of its kind since 2023, will be an opportunity to "take stock" of ecological planning and "undoubtedly to act on a form of remobilization of the government and the Prime Minister," it was specified.

The Elysée Palace acknowledged a "slight slowdown in the decline in greenhouse gas emissions" in the country, with them expected to fall by 1,8% in 2024, according to initial estimates published Friday.

"This is one of the President's motivations for convening this ecological planning council and relaunching, in a number of sectors where we feel we are not completely on track, a mobilization to achieve our objectives," his entourage indicated.

The sectors in question are transport and construction, but also forestry, which absorbs less CO2 than expected. "In these three sectors, there are a number of existing measures that could potentially be expanded," the Élysée Palace suggests.

"We talked about supporting the purchase of electric vehicles, but also about everything that allows, for example, the transition from fossil fuels to electricity in housing," particularly in heating, adds the same source.

Mr. Macron will also speak on Monday at the conclusion of the SOS Oceans conference (Sunday-Monday) in Paris, an event ahead of the third United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC3) in Nice from June 9 to 13.

The President of the Republic will take the opportunity to listen to "the recommendations that will emerge from this meeting and to present some of the objectives that we have set for the UNOC."

It will be "an opportunity to recall our objectives for this conference both in terms of environmental protection (...) but also governance and what we expect from it in terms of promoting science and developing the blue economy," it was specified.
