In Ukraine, Russian Army Bombs Iconic Constructivist Building in Kharkiv

"A direct hit was registered on the Derzhprom building," the name of the building built in 1928, local governor Oleg Synegoubov wrote on Telegram, attaching photos showing a hole in the facade, blown-out windows and destroyed interiors.

With this attack, carried out according to initial reports with guided bombs, "the occupiers have struck an emblematic symbol of the city," added the governor, denouncing "Russian terrorism."

The attack left at least six people injured and also damaged a medical building, according to the same source.

The Derzhprom building, a constructivist complex of administrative buildings connected by footbridges and with a maximum height of 13 floors, is considered the first Soviet skyscraper.

This site is a candidate for inclusion on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The building suffered minor damage in a missile strike in January this year.

The Ukrainian branch of the Icomos (International Council on Monuments and Sites) association claims that it is "the world's first national-level administrative building designed in a modernist style."

Kharkiv, a large city in northeastern Ukraine, is located 30 kilometers from the Russian border and is regularly shelled by the Russian army.
