Mayors of major cities from G7 countries adopted a "Nancy Declaration" on Thursday, June 4, in Lorraine, advocating for the involvement of cities in major diplomatic decisions, which was handed over to the French presidency of the G7, a few days before the Evian summit.
Two days of discussions between elected officials present in Nancy for the Urban7 network summit (founded in 2016 and which brings together major cities from the G7 countries) showed a "convergence" of issues in all corners of the world, said Mathieu Klein, the mayor of Nancy, host of the event.
The elected officials gathered argued for "putting at the top of the political agenda" of heads of state various concerns such as housing, energy transition, and climate resilience, he specified.
Mayors have "expectations" of the heads of state who will meet in Évian from June 15 to 17, stressed the mayor of Rennes, Nathalie Appéré.
"The territories have a say in this increasingly uncertain international context," said the Minister for Rural Affairs, Michel Fournier.
This is the first time in G7 history that cities have obtained a structured channel for dialogue with heads of state, with the recognition of Urban7 as an engagement group in the G7 process.
In terms of public policy, cities "have faster means of action," stressed the mayor of Paris, Emmanuel Grégoire.
"We are now the beacon setting an example of what every city, town, and village in the world should strive for," said Steve Patterson, the mayor of Athens, Ohio, representing the American delegation.
The summit of heads of state of the seven major advanced economies is being held in Evian from June 15 to 17.
