At least one person was killed and 79 others were injured on Monday, September 29, when a three-story building collapsed on the Indonesian island of Java, police said.
The number of missing victims is still unknown.
More than 100 students had gathered for afternoon prayers at the Al-Khoziny Islamic boarding school in the East Java town of Sidoarjo when the building suddenly collapsed, the official Antara news agency reported, citing a witness.
According to police spokesman Jules Abraham Abast, rescuers managed to evacuate 79 injured people who were taken to hospital.
One of the caretakers of the boarding school, Abdus Salam Mujib, told reporters that the building collapsed while workers were pouring concrete to erect an additional floor.
"The building only had three stories. It was planned to be four," he said.
Lax building standards are raising serious concerns about building safety in Indonesia.
In early September, three people were killed and dozens injured when a building housing a prayer hall collapsed in West Java.
In 2022, a three-story mini-market collapsed in South Kalimantan, killing five people. In 2018, 75 people were injured when the mezzanine floor of the Jakarta Stock Exchange building collapsed.
