Rescuers pulled eight bodies from the rubble of a three-story building that collapsed in the northern Indian city of Lucknow on Sunday, media reports said.
The Press Trust of India (PTI) agency carried images of rescue teams using machines to search for victims at the site among piles of concrete.
The building, used by several small businesses including as a warehouse and an auto shop, collapsed Saturday afternoon.
Eight bodies were pulled from the rubble and 28 people were injured, officials were quoted by PTI.
It is not known whether other people are still trapped.
The cause of the collapse has not been identified at this stage, but accidents are common during India's monsoon season, from June to September, when old buildings are weakened by days of continuous rain.
Akash Singh, who worked in the building, said a pillar had cracked and said he had moved to the ground floor fearing the situation would worsen with the monsoon rains.
"Suddenly the entire building collapsed on us," he was quoted as saying by PTI.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath called the deaths "heartbreaking" in a statement and offered his condolences to the bereaved families.
