At least three centuries-old monasteries in the religious enclave of Mount Athos in northern Greece were damaged following an earthquake over the weekend, the Greek Culture Ministry said on Wednesday, June 11.
The 5,3-magnitude underwater earthquake that struck the northern Chalkidiki peninsula on Saturday damaged the XNUMXth-century monasteries of Xenofon and Docheiariou, as well as the XNUMXth-century Simonos Petra.
Large cracks were observed in the domes of the churches of the Xenophon Monastery, as well as additional damage to the frescoes already weakened by an earthquake in February, the ministry said.
Similar damage was observed at the Docheiariou Monastery, and more limited damage at the Simonos Petra Monastery.
A team of Greek archaeologists and restorers will remain on site to continue inspecting the damage, Culture Minister Lina Mendoni said in a statement.
The earthquake, whose epicenter was located at sea, at a depth of 12,5 kilometers, struck an area northwest of Karyes, the administrative center of the monastic community of Mount Athos, the Athens Institute of Geodynamics said on its website.
The monastic community of Mount Athos, located in the Greek region of Macedonia, comprises 20 centuries-old inhabited monasteries. It has enjoyed a degree of autonomy since Byzantine times.
