In Germany, a multi-billion euro contract for the offshore wind network

According to a press release, the connection project named "North Sea Connector 2" will include "an offshore platform" and an "onshore station" located in northern Germany, which will be able to carry up to 2 GW, equivalent to the electricity needs of approximately 2 million households.

Following a call for tenders, the contract was awarded to the German giant Siemens Energy and the offshore wind infrastructure manufacturer Neptun Smulders Offshore Renewables (NSORe).

In order to secure its energy supply and reduce its dependence on other countries, Germany wants to accelerate the production of wind energy in the North Sea.

Other coastal countries too: by early 2026, Germany, Norway, France, Denmark and the United Kingdom had committed to reaching a total capacity of 100 GW via offshore wind in this sea.

Quoted in the press release, German Economy Minister Katherina Reiche stressed the importance of "resilient supply chains", built with "sovereign" technology, in the context of current geopolitical and trade tensions.

Negotiations have also begun with NSORe for "another conversion platform of the same size", according to the 50Hertz press release.

The two companies are responsible for "the design of the overall system, the supply of components, construction, installation on land and at sea, as well as commissioning".

"If this contract materializes, the volume of the two projects would represent approximately 2,5 billion euros for NSORe," according to the press release, which specifies that commissioning is planned "by the end of 2034."
