The majority of electricity production in Finland this weekend was generated by wind power, which reached a record level, grid operator Fingrid announced on Monday (October 28).
Driven by strong autumn winds, wind turbines were producing an average of 6,47 gigawatts of electricity every 15 minutes around 20 p.m. (00 GMT) on Sunday evening, Heini Kanerva of national grid operator Fingrid told AFP.
"A historic record in Finland," said Ms Kanerva, who added that half of all electricity used in Finland on Sunday came from wind.
Nuclear and hydroelectric power generation has therefore been temporarily reduced.
In Finland, the majority of electricity comes from its two nuclear power plants, but wind power is an increasingly important share of energy production.
These production records were therefore expected, declared Heini Kanerva.
"It is the combination of increased capacity through the construction of new wind farms and strong winds," she stressed.
With more than 1.600 wind turbines, the maximum capacity that could be generated from this energy source in Finland currently stands at more than seven gigawatts.
