As the electrification of uses becomes essential to meet the challenge of the energy transition, the integration of new consumption and production uses in housing (photovoltaic panels, electric vehicles, heat pumps, etc.) calls for an evolution of electrical installations to accommodate them safely.
Electrical safety experts unveiled a white paper at the Consuel 2025 Forum outlining design principles for these installations, for both new and existing buildings.
Meeting the challenge of the energy transition and promoting largely decarbonized electricity requires a new phase of residential electrification with the rapid deployment of new equipment – photovoltaic panels, electric vehicle charging infrastructure (EVCI), heat pumps, and battery storage. In particular, our citizens' appetite for self-consumption of electricity continues to grow and is expected to continue to develop.
Entitled "Supporting the electrification of uses: challenges and recommendations for electrical safety in housing", this white paper highlights that these developments are not without challenges for existing and new electrical installations: increased number of loads, combination of uses, electricity reinjection, bidirectional charging of electric vehicles, etc.
Electrical safety professionals believe that the installation of this new equipment, particularly for self-consumption, should always lead to an assessment of the electrical infrastructure's capacity to integrate it, especially given the aging state of many existing infrastructures. Electricians are the professionals who can assist homeowners in this process (it is advisable to use a qualified installer).
The White Paper recommends a pragmatic evolution in the design of electrical infrastructure in housing, with:
- in new construction, the integration of 6 key principles to make the electrical installation an evolving infrastructure, capable of progressively integrating new equipment, as new uses are adopted;
- In the context of work impacting an existing electrical installation, the addition of 4 new principles to be respected.
Through these proposals, the authors of this White Paper invite us to initiate a reflection on the changes to be made to electrical installations, and where appropriate to the regulations that govern them, in order to best support the necessary electrification of uses.
