"A very positive assessment": 600.000 homeless people have been able to find housing since the implementation of the Housing First plan in 2018, announced Valérie Létard, Minister of Housing, in a press release on Thursday, October 10.
This government plan has allowed beneficiaries to "regain their dignity and to consider, in the long term, a return to autonomy", added the minister on the occasion of the international day against homelessness on Thursday.
These figures concern homeless people who have benefited from social housing, but also those who have been supported to reside in a family pension in the private sector.
The Housing First strategy brings together several support mechanisms, in conjunction with local authorities, but also associations, lessors and owners. Initially set up for five years by Emmanuel Macron, it has been renewed until 2027.
According to the Interministerial Delegation for Accommodation and Access to Housing (Dihal), the number of social housing units allocated to homeless people increased by 47% between 2018 and 2023.
The minister also welcomes "innovative measures" such as rental intermediation, or "A Home First" housing, which offers specific support to 3.000 people with "severe mental disorders".
It is difficult to know precisely the number of homeless people in France: there are around 300.000 according to the Abbé Pierre Foundation, while the last official assessment by INSEE, in 2012, estimated their number at 143.000.
