The incident at the press gala, during which an armed man attempted to enter the room where the American president was located before being apprehended, justifies the ongoing construction of a large ballroom at the White House, Donald Trump said a few days ago.
"This incident would never have happened if the military-classified 'top secret' ballroom currently under construction at the White House had already existed," the US president wrote on his Truth Social platform.
Secret Service agents evacuated Donald Trump after shots were fired Saturday night at a gala held in a large Washington hotel.
The assailant was arrested before he could enter the room where the White House Correspondents' Dinner was taking place. Shots were exchanged, according to police.
In October, the Republican president had an entire wing of the White House bulldozed to build this ballroom, which was supposed to be able to accommodate up to 1.000 people for various receptions and dinners in honor of foreign dignitaries.
The comparison made by the president is, however, misleading, because the gala is a private event organized by the White House Correspondents' Association and is not an official event.
"Nothing should hinder its construction, which is on budget and well ahead of schedule," argued the American president, while a US federal judge suspended the construction of this ballroom.
