The government confirmed on Friday, September 27, the launch by the end of 2024 of a major call for tenders for offshore wind power, a highly anticipated event for the sector, which should make it possible to achieve a production target of 18 gigawatts (GW) of electricity in France by 2035.
"The State's decision will be taken in the coming weeks," the Ministry of Ecological Transition announced in a press release.
"The map of priority areas for the development of future parks will be published at this deadline," he added, specifying that "this mapping will allow the launch of the tenth offshore wind call for tenders (AO10) by the end of 2024."
This call for tenders, covering a total power of 8 to 10 GW, should make it possible to achieve the production objective of 18 GW in service in France in 2035, compared to 1,5 GW in 2024.
The announcement was made following a meeting at the Hôtel de Roquelaure between the Ministers of Ecological Transition Agnès Pannier-Runacher, Energy Olga Givernet and the Sea Fabrice Loher with the presidents of the special commissions of the public debate of the National Commission for Public Debate (CNDP).
The previous government had launched a public debate, entitled "The sea in debate", which took place simultaneously on the four maritime facades between November 20, 2023 and April 26, 2024. It resulted in more than 20.000 written contributions, the ministry emphasizes.
This work was intended to "specify the areas suitable for offshore wind power, in order to reconcile decarbonized energy production, fishing and transport activities, and respect for the landscapes and biodiversity of coastal areas and the sea", stressed Agnès Pannier-Runacher.
