A microbiological reality to anticipate

Domestic hot water (DHW) systems are particularly susceptible to the proliferation of Legionella, while Pseudomonas thrives primarily in taps. Cold water is not without its dangers: when stagnant, it quickly reaches a temperature conducive to bacterial growth. Without preventive action, draw-off points then become potential vectors of infection. Given these risks, French regulations impose strict thresholds for Legionella in DHW, but do not yet cover domestic cold water (DCW), even though cross-contamination is possible.

Forced flushing: a reliable and controlled preventive measure

Thermal or chemical disinfection procedures are cumbersome, costly, and potentially aggressive for installations. This is why Geberit recommends focusing on targeted preventive measures. Such as the installation of automatic forced flushing systems, which ensure regular water renewal in at-risk sections.

Programmable according to time, water flow rate or temperature, these devices allow:

to avoid stagnation,
to limit bacterial proliferation,
to ensure the traceability of rinsing operations via a dedicated application or BMS (Building Management System).

Models range from the most compact (HS01, ideal for a rarely used sink) to the most advanced (HS50, multi-fluid and multi-sensory). These units can now be integrated into Geberit WC frames, facilitating maintenance while optimizing network hygiene.

Proper sizing to prevent contamination

Network design plays a decisive role. Its expertise allows Geberit to recommend precise sizing, rigorous hydraulic balancing, and the limitation of dead arms. In rooms with low occupancy, the layout of draw-off points must be carefully considered to avoid stagnant water volumes. Sanitary fixtures must be installed in series, with well-positioned draw-off points to ensure water renewal throughout the network.

Geberit FlowFit, a multi-layer supply system certified NF 545, offers several advantages:

The materials used limit the development of biofilm, provided that the network is well sized, balanced and maintained.
