Gates and fences: after a disappointing 2025, the market hopes to rebound in 2027

A structurally promising market, supported by underlying trends

However, a large proportion of the approximately 20 million homes in France remain to be equipped. Furthermore, the existing stock consists mainly of older gates made of wood, iron, or PVC, often without motors. These are gradually being replaced by gates with modern designs (aluminum, motorized, straight lines, etc.) and/or offering greater privacy (solid, taller, etc.). This dynamic of gate replacement, coupled with an increased desire for privacy and a sense of security, constitutes a solid and difficult-to-reduce base of demand.

Aluminium, the king of materials in a market that it has profoundly reshaped

Aluminum currently holds a dominant position in the market. According to the research firm MSI Reports, approximately 80% of gates and pedestrian gates sold annually in France are made from this material. This dominance stems from a combination of factors: recognized intrinsic qualities (a wide range of colors and finishes, ease of maintenance, resistance to corrosion and UV rays, suitability for motorization, etc.), a perceived quality superior to other materials, a demand for color, and a product range that covers all segments—from entry-level products in DIY stores to premium ranges for professional distributors. Added to this are favorable recommendations from retailers, attracted by higher margins and lower after-sales service rates, as well as a dynamic product offering (a wide range of colors and designs, textured finishes, laser cutting, etc.).

2025: A year of mixed fortunes

Initially envisioned as the year of recovery, 2025 ultimately proved to be a "disappointing" year. The season was slow to get going, before experiencing a surge in activity during the summer, followed by mixed results in the subsequent months. The succession of economic shocks in recent years, combined with a high cost of living and fears of tax increases, exacerbated cautious behavior. Exterior renovations were particularly hard hit, as they are commonly considered "non-essential" and are also relatively expensive. Demand for first-time homebuyers remained weak, with real estate markets at their lowest point (end of a downward cycle).

Outlook for 2026: Caution is advised

For 2026, the industry consensus fluctuates between stability and a moderate decline, with hopes for a stronger recovery by 2027. Above all, manufacturers have faced significant pressure on their purchasing costs in recent months (aluminum and PVC profiles, fuel, etc.), exacerbated by the Middle East war and the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. Price increases have already been announced, and some players are even considering a second increase before the end of the first half of the year. In this context, the individual performance of the various players will depend primarily on their ability to gain market share, in an environment where organic growth will not be sufficient.

Pergolas, carports, and even railings or shutters represent natural growth opportunities for companies already familiar with aluminum and possessing an established distribution network. This "multi-specialist" strategy helps increase the average order value, fosters loyalty among dealer networks by offering them a complete product range, and reduces the seasonality of gate sales.

Special portals to accommodate all configurations

In addition to traditional swing and sliding gates, many gate manufacturers are now developing a range of "special" gates: telescopic or opposing sliding gates, sectional gates, and even folding leaf gates. These niche products are designed to address potential clearance constraints and, for professional clients, to meet all types of requirements.
