French multinationals have not improved their climate action

She was interested in multinationals in the energy (Total, EDF ...), financial (BNP Paribas, Société Générale ...), industrial (Air Liquide, Suez ...), transport ( Air France, ADP, Renault ...), construction (Bouygues ...) and agro-food (Carrefour, Danone ...)

"The cumulative carbon footprint of the twenty-seven multinationals analyzed amounts to 1.854,82 Mt CO2e, or more than four times the territorial emissions of France", according to Notre affaires à tous.

The law on the duty of vigilance of March 27, 2017 obliges companies with more than 5.000 employees in France to establish a vigilance plan to prevent environmental, human rights and corruption risks linked to their activities and their employees. subcontractors and suppliers.

"Global warming posing considerable dangers to humans and ecosystems, it can be reasonably deduced from the requirements of this law the obligation for companies to reduce their climate impact", argues the association.

However, "seven out of 27 companies still do not include the climate in their vigilance plan: Engie, Suez, Eiffage Bouygues, Danone, Veolia and Société Générale", according to a press release. More generally, the climate impact of companies is "insufficiently traced" and "the evaluation of indirect emissions is often neglected". These indirect emissions are those generated by the production of products sold by these companies and their use.

“There has been very little substantive change” compared to 2020, said Laure Barbé, of Our Everyone Affair, at a press conference. "Only five companies are embarking on a 1,5 ° C trajectory" of limiting global warming, targeted by the Paris Agreement, she stressed.

According to this ranking, which is based on a rating system, no company obtains the average. Total, Natixis and Casino rank among the worst performers, while Danone, EDF and Schneider Electric are the best rated.
