The Interprofessional Technical Center for the Study of Atmospheric Pollution (CITEPA) publishes an estimate of France's greenhouse gas emissions for 2021. According to this estimate, French emissions in 2021 are 418 Mt CO2e (excluding the land sector and forests). These results correspond to the trajectory provided for by the National Low-Carbon Strategy. CITEPA also publishes consolidated emissions figures for 2020.
According to the results published by CITEPA for the year 2021, the level of greenhouse gas emissions (418 Mt CO2e) respects the trajectory set by the National Low-Carbon Strategy (422 Mt CO2e). Thus, compared to the year 2019 (before confinement), emissions in 2021 are down by 3,8% (i.e. -16 Mt CO2e, excluding the land and forest sector). Since 2017, the decline has reached 9,6%.
These results prove the effectiveness of French and European systems in transforming the way we produce, travel and consume, and thus reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
While a first step has been taken, efforts must be accelerated in the years to come in order to double the rate of reduction in greenhouse gas emissions in the next five years.
