FSC® certified wood: at the heart of Bjelin's environmental responsibility approach

"The FSC was the first certification we chose to work actively with," explains Georg Vetter, Head of Sustainability at Bjelin.

What is the FSC?

The FSC (Forest Stewardship Council®) is one of the world's most recognized labels for responsible forest management. It was created to contribute to the protection of forests and ensure that timber comes from harvested resources that respect both nature and local communities. This is one of the reasons for its international recognition.

For Georg Vetter: “Given that the majority of our products are made from wood, FSC certification naturally emerged as the starting point for our sustainability approach. It is a globally recognized certification with strong credibility.”

What the certification guarantees

The presence of the FSC label indicates that the wood comes from responsibly managed forests, where forestry practices are adapted to local conditions, sensitive environments are preserved, and people working in the forest are treated fairly.

But the certification doesn't stop there. The FSC also ensures the traceability of the wood at every stage of its journey, from the forest to the finished product. This guarantees that the chosen product meets the same responsible standards throughout the supply chain.

For Georg Vetter: "The FSC enjoys a very high level of consumer trust. The organization invests significant resources in combating fraud and is now the preferred certification system for NGOs committed to sustainable development."

FSC certification does not replace legislation, but it helps to facilitate its application. Through clear guidelines for responsible forest management, it supports both compliance with regulatory requirements and the adoption of more sustainable practices.

For Georg Vetter: "Today, all our Woodura flooring manufactured in-house is FSC certified. This makes it easier to choose flooring designed with respect for future generations."

How does responsible sourcing work?

The first step is to know precisely the origin of the wood. This is why strict requirements are put in place, from the selection of trusted European suppliers to the priority given to FSC-certified materials whenever possible.

For Georg Vetter: “The first and most important principle is that we source exclusively from suppliers based in the European Union. Before entering into a collaboration with a new supplier, we evaluate them not only on economic criteria, but also on their sustainability performance. All suppliers then undergo an annual reassessment, and we conduct random on-site audits to ensure compliance with the expected standards.”

Responsible sourcing also involves recognizing that forests grow slowly and that their long-term health depends on maintaining stable and diverse ecosystems.

"That's why we work with a limited number of wood species," adds Georg Vetter.

Use wood more efficiently

Sustainability also concerns how wood is used. Valuing every part of the tree, rather than wasting parts of it, reduces the pressure on forest resources. By using raw materials more efficiently, it is possible to produce more with fewer trees.

For Georg Vetter: "The most important thing the industry can do is use wood in the most efficient way possible. Instead of burning the residues, they should be used in the manufacture of particleboard or wood powder products."

Sustainability also means the longevity of products. Choosing materials designed to last helps avoid frequent replacements. Ultimately, the most sustainable choice is often a product that can be enjoyed for many years.

What future for responsible sourcing?

As forests face increasing pressures from climate change, pests, droughts and rising demand for timber, responsible sourcing will become more essential than ever.

For Georg Vetter: "Certification systems such as the FSC will continue to evolve, as will regulations and societal expectations. In this context, the FSC provides a structured framework, transparency, and a common reference point for all stakeholders."
