Engie completes financing for its first offshore wind farm in Poland

The project, with an installed capacity of 390 megawatts (MW), "is moving from development to the construction phase", says the French energy company, which is leading it through Ocean Winds, its joint venture dedicated to offshore wind power owned 50/50 with the Spanish company EDP Renewables, a wind power specialist.

"The BC-Wind project is expected to produce its first megawatts in 2028 and, once fully operational, will supply renewable electricity to nearly half a million Polish households," he said.

The park will comprise 26 turbines of 14 MW each, with a capability allowing them to reach 15 MW each, for a total capacity of up to 390 MW. It will be located in the Baltic Sea, 23 kilometers from the coastline.

The project is supported by the European Investment Bank (EIB) with a contribution of "nearly a third of the total amount", as well as by the Spanish Instituto de Crédito Oficial (ICO) and 13 commercial banks.

"Our first offshore wind farm off the Polish coast, BC-Wind, strengthens our presence in a rapidly developing market where Engie already operates 360 MW of 100% renewable capacity," said Paulo Almirante, Engie's Deputy Chief Executive Officer in charge of renewable and flexibility activities.

"With this project, we are supporting the country's energy transition and consolidating our position as a major player in offshore wind power with nearly 19 gigawatts (GW) of projects in operation, under construction or in advanced stages of development worldwide," he added.

In Poland, 56% of electricity produced was from coal in 2024, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA).
