Energy renovation: three times more homes renovated in the first quarter than in a year, according to the government

The number of homes undergoing major renovations subsidized by the state tripled in the first quarter of the year, compared to the same period in 2024, according to figures from the National Housing Agency (ANAH) published by the government on Tuesday, April 29.

Between January and March, "17.178 homes underwent major renovations," i.e., multiple works to improve the energy performance of a home by several labels in the energy performance diagnosis (DPE), indicates the Ministry of Housing.

This is "three times more than in the first quarter of 2024", a period during which 5.584 major renovations were recorded, which reflects a "progressive appropriation" of the public aid system for major renovations.

The renovation momentum had already seen "a real acceleration" at the end of 2024, with "unprecedented" levels of requests for aid and subsidies granted, according to the Anah. In the fourth quarter, 48.629 homes had received aid for major renovations, and 91.374 in total last year.

Nearly 80% of major renovations in 2025 will concern homes classified as F or G in the DPE, the most energy-intensive dwellings and whose rental will require the owner to carry out energy improvement work by 2028.

"The average cost of the work amounts to 59.197 euros, with an average aid of 41.201 euros provided by MaPrimeRénov'", which represents a total of 700 million euros in public aid.

In addition, 46.331 homes underwent "renovation by gesture", such as window insulation only or changing the heating system.

In her press release, the Minister for Housing, Valérie Létard, boasts of having achieved consistency in the rules of MaPrimeRénov' in 2025, which has led to "quantitative success."

"It must now also be a qualitative success, which is what we will dedicate our efforts to in the coming weeks," she adds.

The ministry has set four priorities for improving the system: reducing the processing times for aid applications, strengthening the monitoring of those involved in cases of suspected fraud, deploying new tools to combat fraud and better controlling the cost of work, in particular "by considering a reduction in the ceiling for work for 2026".
